Video Interviews on Mobile Devices

Candidates can complete Anna video interviews from their phones, so a video assessment no longer depends on having a desktop or laptop to hand.

Video AI interviews worked only on a desktop or laptop. A candidate who reached a video interview stage on a phone was told to switch devices to continue, and where no desktop was available the assessment could not be completed at all.

What's new

• Video recording on Android — supported in Chrome 49 or later, which covers effectively every Android device in use.

• Video recording on iPhone and iPad — supported in Safari on iOS and iPadOS 18.4 or later.

• Automatic browser detection — Fountain checks whether the candidate's browser supports the required video format before the interview begins.

• The same fallback for unsupported devices — a candidate whose browser cannot record video sees the existing message recommending a desktop or laptop, so there is no new candidate-facing error state.

• Applies to existing video interviews — mobile support extends to any job type that already has video interviews turned on.

Why it matters

Requiring a video interview meant asking candidates to find a desktop computer, which cost completions in frontline hiring where most people apply from a phone. Video is also the strongest signal available for confirming that the person interviewing is the person who applied, so teams that want that assurance no longer have to trade it against reach.

What to expect

Video asks more of a candidate than a call does, and granting camera access on a phone is a real point of friction for frontline applicants. If an interview is running as audio only today and there is no business reason it needs video, audio remains the lower-friction choice, and turning video on should be expected to cost some completions. Candidates on iPhones running an iOS version earlier than 18.4 still see the fallback message recommending a desktop or laptop, and an outdated iOS version is the most common reason recording fails on a phone.
